Illustrator Tom Gold comments on his comics

Bumkniga publishes Cooking with Kafka, a new short comic book by Tom Gold. At the request of the Billboard Daily, illustrator The Guardian and The New Yorker commented on several stories from the new book and talked about where he gets ideas and how he procrastinates.

“I still remember Jamie Hewlett’s Tankista comic book, which I lent to one unreliable friend (now an unreliable ex-friend) in 1996. I haven’t seen her again. ”

“I like paper books. I tried reading from the Kindle and iPad, but these are still different things. The Internet helps a lot to find new comics and new artists, but I get a lot more pleasure from reading printed comics. I also like a good book design that will add an extra layer to the story. My second favorite format is audiobooks. Sometimes I listen to them when I am involved in routine work, such as cleaning scans or coloring. ”

“At the head of my bed is a huge pile of unread books. This is my problem: when I come to the bookstore, a highbrow intellectual wakes up in me and I decide that I want to read Ulysses or something like that. But then I return home – and I’m drawn to something easier.

Recently, I often take books in the library, where I go with my children once a week. If I do not read the book, it returns to the library, and does not remain reproachfully hanging over me. I still have not broken through the first chapter of the Endless Joke by David Foster Wallace, but I intend to finish it someday. ”
“I like all kinds of books, and I think arrogance is a stupid quality. On the other hand, I am annoyed by the anti-intellectualism that can sometimes be found in our culture. I sometimes read comments from people who think that drawing comics about Tolstoy or Dickens is an elitist show off. But I don’t want anyone to feel stupid because of my comics. Therefore, referring to a specific author, I try to focus on the known aspects of his work, and not on internal jokes that only real fans will understand. ”

“The idea of this comic, like many others, is taken from real life, but exaggerated for a comic effect. I always take too many books with me because I don’t want to find that I have nothing to read. However, usually I read only one of the books.

I like it when the book takes place in a place where I rest. Next week I am going to call in Belgium and therefore try to find a short thriller that takes place in Brussels or Ghent. Plus, of course, spare reading. ”

“Yes, that’s how I feel, drawing another comic book. It is not easy to work on the technical side of the picture, while trying to keep it in mind, which made the original idea funny. It seems to people that I sit and giggle all day, and the comics themselves joyfully fly out from under my pen. In fact, for a joke to work, it takes a lot of quiet reflection and small corrections in the text and pictures.

Weekly deadlines make you draw comics, even if I’m not in shape. I tell myself: if there is no good idea, take the least bad idea and work hard on it until it gets better. And when I finish, I sometimes find that the idea was good from the very beginning. ”
“The main secret of coming up with ideas is this: sometimes you need to sit at the table and work hard, and sometimes you need to forget about work for a while and relax. The difficulty is in understanding which of the two strategies will work best now.

My favorite type of procrastination is taking a walk and drinking coffee. Although often this is how I find good ideas, so perhaps this is not entirely procrastination. But what really devours my time is the Internet, especially twitter, where I spend all my time too. ”

“I like paper books. I tried reading from the Kindle and iPad, but these are still different things. The Internet helps a lot to find new comics and new artists, but I get a lot more pleasure from reading printed comics. I also like a good book design that will add an extra layer to the story.
