Russian comics enter the international market

Bubble comics began their foreign expansion with the market leader – the Internet portal ComiXology Today, the first international series of Russian Bubble comics from the Meteor line went on sale at the largest international Internet portal ComiXology. The retail price for one English-language number is 99 cents. “This is very prestigious both for us and for the Russian comics industry as a whole,” Artem Gabrelyanov, editor-in-chief of Bubble Publishing House, told Izvestia. – Until now, none of the Russian publishers have taken such a successful step – to get to the most famous portal with millions of sales. So far, only Meteora has been released, but in the future we plan to present all our five episodes there: Besoboy, Major Thunder, etc. Recently we were at the Comic Con in San Diego, and our booth was located next to the booth of DC Comics, known worldwide for its hero – Batman. Our products are perceived as competitive, and now we are negotiating with a number of foreign publishers on the publication of English versions of our series. Amazon’s ComiXology website is today one of the largest thematic comic book selling sites in various digital formats, including iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Windows 8. In particular, it owns exclusive rights to sell products from two studios. Giants – Marvel Comics and DC Comics, and all presented the products of 75 of the most famous publishers. Today, Bubble comics are the most widely read in Russia, where the products of such publishers as ABC, XL Media, Comme il faut, Ramona, Zangavar are on the market. At the same time, Bubble is the only publisher that monthly releases several episodes of its comics. “Thanks to popularization through cinema, comics are very much in demand around the world today,” co-organizer of the Comic con St. festival told Izvestia. Peterburg Mikhail Vorontsov. – The leading publishers are, of course, Marvel and DC, but the market always needs something new. Including domestic – of course, we need our own product, including one that could represent Russia abroad. I recently returned from New York, where the second largest festival after San Diego takes place, and I can say that there is interest in Russia. But, firstly, we are practically not represented at festivals, and secondly, in order to enter the international market, we need to publish English versions. Because many people don’t even know that we have our own comics in Russia. And when we talk about this, we are asked – is it in English? Therefore, the release of Bubble comics on ComiXology is a good step forward. But presence alone, even on such a portal, will not make big sales. The most popular comics of the same Marvel became only after the film adaptation. For example, the trailer for the movie “Deadpool” has just been released – and then comics about this character began to be sold out. The two leading companies in the world market for many years are Marvel Comics and DC Comics (their total share is about 70-80% of the total market), long competing with each other both on paper and on the screen. It’s no secret that with the film adaptation of comics, a new golden age has come for the industry. For example, the Walt Disney Company for $ 4 billion acquired the company Marvel Entertainment Inc., specializing in the production of comic book movies. As part of the deal, Walt Disney won the rights to 5 thousand popular cartoon characters, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, etc. After the purchase, the cost of Disney shares rose from $ 26 to $ 100 per share. Already in 2015, the studio’s revenue from paintings and TV shows Marvel amounted to approximately $ 8 billion. At the same time, Marvel tried to regain the rights to Spider-Man in the movie for a very long time, offering Sony Pictures several billion dollars. As a result, an agreement was signed between the companies, according to which this character will appear in new Marvel paintings – the first film under the leadership of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feigi and former Sony Pictures president Amy Pascal will be released in 2017. Films of Marvel receive 47% more fees in the American box office than DC – on average, one film company from all released after 1998 makes $ 190 million in profit. For example, “Avengers” occupy the third place in the ranking of the highest grossing pictures in the entire rental history, second only to “Avatar” and “Titanic”. Image Comics Studios (4th in the list of the largest comic book publishers in the world) significantly improved their financial affairs when they purchased the rights to the adaptation of The Walking Dead series, created by Robert Kirkman. Today they are the most popular. comics studios, and the channel AMC Networks is releasing the sixth season of the series. The first series of the project was watched by more than 5.3 million people – this is a record for the channel. Thanks to The Walking Dead, channel revenue has increased by more than 40%. A separate income item consists of various marketing campaigns.
