Comic book author Birgit Vaye: It’s Paradise Cold

Birgit Vaye combines avant-garde comics with the African language of forms. In Madgermanes [“Majermans”], she captured the story of the Mozambican workers in the GDR. They were promised education, but they received only casual work. After 17 hours, they were supposed to stay in their dormitories, women and men were housed separately, and communication with the locals was not welcome. Pregnant women had to have an abortion, or they were sent back, and half of their earnings were sent to Mozambique to guarantee their subsequent return to their homeland. So in the 1980s there were about 20,000 contract workers from Mozambique – they were called the “Majermans”: apparently, intentionally distorting the phrase “Made in Germany” in the socialist fraternal country of the GDR. A Special Chapter There is one special chapter in the history of the German Democratic Republic going down, which Birgit Vaye reveals in Madgermanes. As in many stories about the GDR, the tragic and the absurd are next to each other. “They took off in response to a promise that they would go to heaven and learn something,” says Birgit Vaye, a German artist and comic book author born in 1969 who grew up in Continue reading

Incomplete atlas of fantastic maps

In the second issue of The Keepers (comic book series), masked adventurers gather around a map of the United States. It shows in close-up the geographical regions marked as “Anti-war demonstration”, “Black riots”, “Drugs”, “promiscuous sexual relations”. Captain Metropolis perceives this card as a challenge to the Fighters against crime, as he called his squad. This card for some of the Guardians symbolizes the decline of America, which, in their opinion, they must save, although others believe that there is nothing more to tinker with. Edward Blake, The Comedian, ignores Captain Metropolis. Turning away, resting his legs on the table, he reads a newspaper with the headline “France is leaving NATO”, turning the page, he will set fire to the map of Captain Metropolis. The comedian likes to counteract the rest of the keepers by laughing in their faces. He is a cynic. The reaction to America’s map for Crime Fighters was Continue reading

“Love and rockets” again on horseback: “We have influenced a bunch of artists”

The cult comic strip about California punks next month will return to newsstands and talk about heroes looking back on their own lives. One of the leading comic book industry magazines, Previews, called it “2016 Comic Book Event.” The new issue of Love and Rockets (Love and Rockets, Vol. IV No. 1), dated July 2016, but actually only available for sale on September 28, does not include any plastic figures of super-soldiers. Instead, the comic book, which is experiencing its rebirth on the 35th anniversary of its appearance, will simply continue its story – the one that has repeatedly earned the approval of critics and talked about aging punks from Southern California and rural cranks from Central America. Rolling Stone Magazine recognized Love and Rockets as the best graphic novel of all time, not related to superheroes, comparing them with the music of Clash, REM, and Run-DMC. Time magazine, meanwhile, included its creators, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, brothers of Hispanic descent, in the Top 100 innovators of the 21st century. Jaime and Gilbert (the third founder of the series, Mario Hernandez stopped participating in the project several years ago) began writing and drawing their comics in 1981, although his form of release, like the brothers’ stories themselves, changed somewhat over time. In the late 90s, the release of Love and Rockets was temporarily interrupted, and then its creators changed the format and for the last few Continue reading

LORAN GALMO: WAYS OF PUBLISHING COMICS

Everyone was looking forward to this meeting in the Sakharov Center. In France, today is one of the most coherent systems for publishing comics. Rarely is there an opportunity to learn about it first hand. But the conversation exceeded all expectations. Laurent Galmo has a great deal of editorial experience behind him. He edited magazines, issued a ticket to the life of many albums … Technical education allows Galmo to freely operate with numbers and statistics. Needless to say, the amount of information gathered left everyone with a slight shock. Now, finally, a printed version has also appeared, for which a tremendous human thanks to Andrei and Natasha Snegirev, who saved all the performance on the recorder. Anyway: they helped out like that!

The highly specialized focus of the conversation with domestic comicsmakers made communication through the Continue reading

HOW TO MAKE A PLOT FOR A COMIC AND WRITING A SCENARIO

Why do I need a script

In time immemorial, a man picked up a notebook, drew the first page on 12 cells and began to draw a comic book. The main good character in this comic was himself, the main reptile is a bad guy from a neighboring yard. The bad was the head of the mafia, the cannibal and the hired alien, the good was a karate master, knew how to fly, rise from the dead, and generally saved everyone.

The plot of the comic book developed spontaneously, developing dynamically in places, sometimes falling into boring five pages. It can be said with sufficient confidence that in the beginning everything went as it should, in the second half it’s boring, the finale was crumpled and at best took two pages, more often – in the last frame someone shot from a big gun, and all the bastards, along with minor Continue reading
